If you have conquered the first four sets of San Diego stairs and are ready for a new challenge I have another batch for you interval enthusiasts. Interval training is a great way to improve your aerobic and anaerobic fitness without a treadmill. Sites like these allow you take your training outside the gym for some fresh air in a way that will no doubt improve your work capacity and performance.
Balboa Park's Juniper Staircase
The Balboa Park’s Juniper Staircase is 98 steps of rugged glory. The steps are mostly shaded and at the base of the stairs there is a fork where two trails begin. These stairs are made of earth and rocks, but they are plenty stable. I would recommend bringing music with you due to the noise produced by the 163 freeway. It is located south of the intersection of Balboa drive and Juniper Road.
Swami’s Beach in Encinitas
Swami’s Beach is a popular surf spot in Encinitas that has a set of stairs that takes your from the top of the bluff to the beach. There are 140 steps in two sections. The first set being cement, but the majority being wooden. This is an awesome spot if you want to combine your interval training with a surf session. There is a small parking lot at the entrance, but there is ample street parking among the Meditation Gardens. It is located at 1298 S Coast Hwy 101, Encinitas, CA 92024.
Tide Park Beach in Solana Beach
Tucked away in between the residences these 142 stairs lead you to a secluded and peaceful beach. The walkway is a bit on the narrower side so be mindful of passer-by-ers. This particular set of stairs is unique in the way that it is almost all one continuous straight away. The area only has street parking and is residential, so be courteous with your volume level. It is located at intersection of Solana Vista Dr. and W Circle Drive.
Once used by the children of the neighboring school, these stairs are are now used by interval training enthusiasts. These 112 steps have been given the nickname, “Stairs of Death”, due to their steep incline. After you have conquered the stairs of death you will be treated to a beautiful view of the surrounding area. The stairs are located near the intersection of Clairemont Mesa Blvd and Antigua Blvd.
